The tribals fondly call him as Jaipur Uncle denoting the artificial Jaipur foot he gives to the handicapped. Dr. Vijendra Rao is responsible for conducting polio camps, polio awareness camps and managing booths in the unreachable parts of the forests, responsible for spreading the importance of polio surveillance to the teaching community, community health workers, and the deep interior tribal areas.

He was also instrumental in conducting first ever community based rehabilitation of incurable blind. He personally trained them and amalgamated them into the activities of daily living and economic independence. He is the first and the only Rotary volunteer Orthopedic Surgeon from Dist. 3150. Till date, he participated and performed 150 polio corrective surgeries conducted by Rotary Club of Bareli, UP, India, in December, 2001, to motivate people to get polio vaccination done to their children, where, even today no fresh polio cases are reported.

In November 2002 he conducted polio corrective surgeries for second time as Rotary volunteer surgeon from R.I. Dist. 3150, in Aligarh, R.I. Dist. 3110 in UP, India, co-coordinated by PRIP Rtn. Rajendra Saboo. This year he performed 219 polio corrective surgeries in April, 2003 in a polio surgical camp conducted by Rotary Club of Chandausi, on behalf of India National Polio-plus Committee.
